The Process

Three steps. No phone tag.

Most services make you call in and sit through a pitch. Ours starts online and only calls you if we have a real question about your application.

Tell us about your operation

Fill out one form with your business info, vehicle details, and cargo type — in English or Spanish. Takes about 6 minutes.

2File

We prepare and file everything

A licensed specialist checks your application for the mistakes that cause FMCSA rejections, then files your USDOT, MC, and BOC-3.

3Confirm

Get your numbers and next steps

We send your USDOT and MC numbers plus a plain-English checklist for insurance and the 21-day FMCSA review window.

Pricing

Three tiers. One clear price.

Questions

What owner-operators ask us most

What's the difference between a USDOT number and an MC number?+
Your USDOT number identifies your company for safety and compliance monitoring — almost every commercial carrier needs one. Your MC number (operating authority) is what legally allows you to haul regulated freight or passengers for hire across state lines. Most interstate for-hire carriers need both, and we file both together in every package.
How long does it actually take to get my authority?+
Your USDOT number is typically issued right away. Your MC number is assigned quickly, but the FMCSA requires a waiting period — usually around 21 days — before it becomes active, regardless of which filing service you use. Our tiers control how fast we prepare and submit your paperwork, which is the part we can actually speed up.
Do I need a truck before I apply?+
No. You can file for your USDOT and MC numbers before you own or lease a truck. You will need active commercial insurance and a filed BOC-3 before your authority activates, but the application itself doesn't require a vehicle on hand.
Is Authority Lane affiliated with the FMCSA or DOT?+
No. Authority Lane is an independent filing service. We are not the FMCSA, the Department of Transportation, or any government agency, and we don't charge government fees on their behalf beyond passing through the $300 filing fee. You can always file directly with the FMCSA yourself at no service cost — we exist for owner-operators who'd rather not navigate the paperwork alone.
What happens if my application gets rejected?+
Most rejections come from mismatched business info, missing BOC-3 filings, or lapsed insurance — the exact errors our specialists check for before submission. If the FMCSA does flag something after filing, we help you correct and resubmit at no extra service charge within 90 days of your original order.
Can I get help in Spanish?+
Yes — the entire process, including the intake form, specialist communication, and your confirmation documents, is available fully in Spanish. Visit our Spanish site to get started.
